A common thread in video games is searching for the holy grail of an original, innovative, new idea which no-one has ever thought of, which will capture and electrify the public’s imagination and drive consumers mad with desire and hunger for playing it and telling all their friends about their experience.
However, a new idea does not define true creativity. We must never lose sight of the fact that sequels to existing titles have to be creative in order to differentiate themselves from the original release. The hardest thing to achieve is to persuade people to part with their money as there are so many competing forms of entertainment demanding consumers hard earned money. In some ways sequels are harder to create for than new original games. Innovate and add new features is what games like FIFA 10 have to do to invite back gamers each yeat…..360 degree control anybody?
FIFA 10….to be this successfull….takes….new ideas, new features, that enhance football year on year
To define if something is creative the key is firstly to define and understand what creativity is.
The dictionary defines creativity as the tendency to generate or recognize ideas, alternatives, or possibilities that may be useful in solving problems, communicating with others, and entertaining ourselves and others.
Let’s delve deeper.
There are three reasons why people are motivated to be creative:
- need for novel, varied, and complex stimulation
- need to communicate ideas and values
- need to solve problems
In order to be creative, you need to be able to view things in new ways or from a different perspective. Amongst other things, you need to be able to generate new possibilities or new alternatives. Tests of creativity measure not only the number of alternatives that people can generate but the uniqueness of those alternatives. the ability to generate alternatives or to see things uniquely does not occur by change; it is linked to other, more fundamental qualities of thinking, such as flexibility, tolerance of ambiguity or unpredictability, and the enjoyment of things heretofore unknown.

So we have ascertained that a commonly sought after skill in life is creativity but it is interesting to try to understand the characteristics of a creative person.
- Creative individuals have a great deal of energy, but they are also often quiet and at rest.
- Creative individuals tend to be smart, yet also naive at the same time.
- Creative individuals have a combination of playfulness and discipline, or responsibility and irresponsibility.
- Creative individuals alternate between imagination and fantasy at one end, and rooted sense of reality at the other.
- Creative people seem to harbor opposite tendencies on the continuum between extroversion and introversion.
- Creative individuals are also remarkable humble and proud at the same time.
- Creative individuals to a certain extent escape rigid gender role stereotyping and have a tendency toward androgyny.
- Generally, creative people are thought to be rebellious and independent.
- Most creative persons are very passionate about their work, yet they can be extremely objective about it as well.
- The openness and sensitivity of creative individuals often exposes them to suffering pain yet also a great deal of enjoyment.

Right, let’s apply this to gaming. Creativity in games has always been helped along by steps & often leaps forward in technology. Games like Pac-Man and Space Invaders require very little processing power and their ‘addictiveness’ relies in simple core fun gameplay. Fast forward, through each technology jump, right through to high end PC’s and games consoles like the PS3 and Xbox 360, gaming has benefited from increases in technological processing power and more realistic environments to play in. But there is more to creativity than technology.
Just remember back a couple of years in gaming. The video game industry faced a hardening of the creative arteries as aging gamers’ tastes increasingly shifted toward sequels and games based on movies. With more and more titles chasing the success of their predecessors and content owners digging deep into their libraries to tap older material for quick fail-proof conversion into games, the industry faced with a question more serious than rhetorical: What’s new? I remember Toru Iwatani, the creator of Pac-Man stating, “The gaming industry will shrink unless we start to see new games”. The focus on sequels was also helped by the high up-front costs of developing games which caused developers to rely more on sure-fire hits and take less risks on new, innovative titles.
Fast forward to today. How things have changed for gaming. Games companies are seeking to innovate through creativity to win customers hearts and minds and therefore market share. Remember back that even EA was accused of ‘sequelitus’, ie pumping out an annual release of a sequel. Today that is further from the truth. Take EA now, with games like Mirror’s Edge, Crysis, Rock Band, Dead Space, Dante’s Inferno, Army of Two, Boom Blox, Spore, RAGE, to name but a few, are all brand new games, (and therefore risks).
Returning to the earlier point, sequels have to have a clear USP, (Unique Selling point), to ensure that people want to buy them. This is where creativity kicks in. Take Burnout Paradise, the next in the highly acclaimed Burnout franchise. I am sure many people will agree that Burnout is the best arcade racing experience that money can buy. It would have been easy for the team to rest on their laurels and just make minor revisions to an already cool game Burnout Revenge…..enhance the graphics, add some new features, add new cars etc But with Burnout Paradise the team went straight back into redesigning the game and ensuring the games player recognized the core Burnout experience but really added to this, be it through creating a true online open racing world where for the first time gamers could race online against friends across the world, without entering and waiting in lobbies. Burnout Paradise excels and innovates in so many areas that whilst it is a sequel, creativity and innovation take the gaming experience to a new level.
Interestingly, film has arguably stagnated in its creative offering. When a format remains stable creativity is harder. Film has reached the stage when the wow moments of visual effects have now passed. Audiences are so used to the wizardry and trickery of visual effects that they no longer sit on the edge of their seats. Film Directors, so used to working with basic scripts with little story or appeal, but being able to throw stunning visual effects round the screen to entertain audiences are now scratching their heads and starting to look at the basics of a great film ie a compulsive story that engages, hooks in the viewer, then allows for the suspension of disbelief and the roller coaster of emotions can begin, as stunning visual effects are no longer enough to entertain.
Creativity in story telling is hard. It is a commonly held view in film and literature that there are only 7 main plots that stories follow.
The seven basic plots are:
1 – [wo]man vs. nature
2 – [wo]man vs. man
3 – [wo]man vs. the environment
4 – [wo]man vs. machines/technology
5 – [wo]man vs. the supernatural
6 – [wo]man vs. self
7 – [wo]man vs. god/religion
There are also claims made that there are seven basic needs to a story line. So I thought I would add them.
1. A hero – the person through whose eyes we see the story unfold, set against a larger background.
2. The hero’s character flaw – a weakness or defense mechanism that hinders the hero in such a way as to render him/her incomplete.
3. Enabling circumstances – the surroundings the hero is in at the beginning of the story, which allow the hero to maintain his/her character flaw.
4. An opponent – someone who opposes the hero in getting or doing what he/she wants. Not always a villain. For example, in a romantic comedy, the opponent could be the man or woman whom the hero seeks romance with. The opponent is the person who instigates the life-changing event.
5. The hero’s ally – the person who spends the most time with the hero and who helps the hero overcome his/her character flaw.
6. The life-changing event – a challenge, threat or opportunity usually instigated by the opponent, which forces the hero to respond in some way that’s related to the hero’s flaw.
7. Jeopardy – the high stakes that the hero must risk to overcome his/her flaw. These are the dramatic events that lend excitement and challenge to the quest.
It may be worth noting that Christopher Booker in his “Seven Basic Plots — why we tell stories” has a different take –
The man vs xxxx plots above would all be summarised as “overcoming the monster”.
The beast within hell: Dante’s Inferno
He gives us, (this is an oversimplification):
1. Overcoming the monster — defeating some force which threatens… e.g. most Hollywood movies; Star Wars, James Bond.
2. The Quest — typically a group setoff in search of something and (usually) find it. e.g. Watership Down, Indiana Jones.
3. Journey and Return — the hero journeys away from home to somewhere different and finally comes back having experienced something and maybe changed for the better. e.g. Wizard of Oz, Gullivers Travels.
4. Comedy – not necessarily a funny plot. Some kind of misunderstanding or ignorance is created that keeps parties apart which is resolved towards the end bringing them back together. e.g.Bridget Jones Diary, War and Peace.
5. Tragedy – Someone is tempted in some way, vanity, greed etc and becomes increasingly desperate or trapped by their actions until at a climax they usually die. Unless it’s a Hollywood movie, when they escape to a happy ending. e.g. Devils’ Advocate, Hamlet.
6. Rebirth – hero is captured or oppressed and seems to be in a state of living death until it seems all is lost when miraculously they are freed. e.g. Snow White.
7. Rags to Riches – self explanatory really. e.g. Cinderella & derivatives (all 27,000 of them)!!!
Each of these plots goes through 4 or 5 main phases which are universally recognisable and re-used. Some stories choose to jump in at phase 3 or leave early and often leave us feeling unsatisfied.
So we now have a good definition of creativity and an idea of the basic core themes of story lines.

Oh, and by the way…don’t worry about my Doberman. He won’t bother you. But, whatever you do, do NOT under ANY circumstances talk to my parrot!” When the repairman arrived at Mrs. Agathe’s apartment the next day, he discovered the biggest and meanest looking Doberman he had ever seen. But just as she had said, the dog simply laid there on the carpet, watching the repairman go about his business. However, the whole time the parrot drove him nuts with his incessant cursing, yelling and name-calling. Finally the repairman couldn’t contain himself any longer and yelled, “Shut up, you stupid ugly bird!” To which the parrot replied, “Get him, Spike!”

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.
I agree completely along with your conclusions and believe you’ve made some excellent points. Also, I prefer the layout of your respective site plus the simplicity of navigation. I’ve bookmarked your website and may return often!

PlayStation Phone – No internal memory? That seems kind of weird since I doubt this thing will use UMD. Also, isn’t the PSP2 coming out next year? Will they make a PSP Phone 2? I’m kind of skeptical on this one. well, i can’t edit…but i wanted to add this. i wont be surprised if sony adds some type of adapter add on to the PS3 (something to support the IR blasters, and maybe a small unit within that add on that has more RAM) so it can support google tv. It would make so much sense for sony to be even more of a presence in the living room, other than what the ps3 can already do. If google tv ends up working out all the kinks, and getting better…i wouldn’t be surprised. On top of that being a selling point (a huge one) over the Wii and similar to the Xbox integration w/ att uverse, you’d be able to get the PSP phone and the ps3 to work all buddy buddy together. the possibilities are endless if you ask me. This would be called product synergy sony…listen to me
