Choosing the right Degree can get you the chance to work on the World’s biggest games!
Following our blog on Games Degrees, I have been inundated with emails about which Degree course someone should study and which are the best Educational Institutions. Let’s start in the UK……..and we will follow up with the USA, Canada & Asia at a later date.
As previously mentioned in the blog ‘Recruitment in a recession…..Part One…Students & Graduates’, (found here: http://tinyurl.com/ksb27t ), choosing your degree is critical. Take a look at the article again for reasons why and the sort of questions you need to ask.
Cards on the table, EA is well known for having a preference towards traditional degrees over gaming degrees, (there are a number of solid gaming degrees in the USA which EA partner with and recruit from but to their strength they are very technically anchored and have traditional education at their core).
The UK is witnessing a spiralling in the number of games degrees. As is natural, Universities are under pressure for funding, funding depends on courses popularity and bums on seats, hence Universities will offer courses to attract students and maintain funding….all is natural in the circle of life. This means that some courses in the UK are not as well thought through as they should be and do not prepare students for their later career. But which are the best courses?
So where to look at courses?…….. one source of common advice is to utilise Skillset. Skillset is the industry body which supports skills and training for people and businesses to ensure the UK creative media industries maintain their world class position. Skillset have spent considerable time accrediting those Universities that have approached them that offerGaming Degrees. What does accreditation mean and how is it done? In Skillset’s words: ‘Devised by Skillset in consultation with the industry and education providers, the accreditation scheme recognises courses within the UK that provide exceptional standards of training. Rigorously assessed by industry professionals, these courses have gained the backing of over 50 companies and individuals from the UK games industry’.
The Skillset Games Courses accredited thus far are:
BA (Hons) Computer Arts, University of Abertay Dundee
BSc (Hons) Computer Games Technology, University of Abertay Dundee
BSc (Hons) Computer Games Technology, University of the West of Scotland
BA in Computer Animation, Glamorgan Centre for Art & Design Technology
MSc in Games Programming, the University of Hull
BSc in Computer Games Programming, Teeside
As a footnote, these are the courses that Skillset have accredited, they are not necessarily endorsed by EA as offering the best courses. It should be noted that Courses / Institutions have to approach Skillset for accreditation, (hence some quality courses may not have sought accreditation). Currently non games degrees have not been accredited by Skillset.

The answer is NO. Because instituions have to apply for accreditation. secondly these are only games courses. how hypocritical of the industry to say that traditional degrees are important, then the quasi government body Skillset only look at gaming degrees.
And what a pathetic joke…2 courses from Abertay…2/6. And the West of Scotland.
These accreditations are an embarassment on the industry. let’s hope that skillset need new leadership and a rocket up their arse
